How to Get Started on your Yoga Journey
If you’ve ever been intrigued in starting something new or picking up a hobby that you've never tried before, like yoga, it can be challenging to know where to start. There are a lot of stereotypes around what it means to do yoga, which makes it even that much harder to know where to begin your journey. When you hear the word yoga you might think of someone who just stands on their heads, someone who is really flexible, or someone who meditates all day. You also might be overwhelmed by the number of options for yoga studios and gyms in your area that offer yoga.
But no need to feel overwhelmed anymore. We’ve put together the perfect guide for you to help you start your yoga journey. Read below to gain a basic understanding of how to find your place in the yoga world and what to keep in mind as you start this journey.
SO WHAT IS YOGA?
The great thing about yoga is that it is different for everyone. Forget any stereotype you might have about what yoga is supposed to be or look like. Your practice is your own and when you walk into the studio, your space is what you make of it. To sum it up, yoga is the practice of linking your breath with your movement through poses. Outside of the physical poses, yoga is also a lifestyle! This lifestyle can look different for everybody. You might begin to experience mindfulness in your everyday life, begin to practice meditation, breathing techniques, and maybe even alter what you’re eating.
Yoga will benefit you in and outside of your mat. Physically, you will begin to feel release and strength in your muscles. You will learn how to start incorporating breath work in your everyday life and might use it as an outlet to relieve stress or clear your mind. Mentally, you might start to feel what people called “zenned out” throughout your day. Sometimes, people will even sleep better throughout the night. These are just some of the benefits you will feel once you start your practice, but it will be different for everyone! Typically, to experience the benefits of yoga, we recommend that you get on your mat at least once a week.
DIFFERENT KINDS OF YOGA
There are dozens of different styles of yoga ranging from restorative yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa, candlelight yoga, hot yoga, chair yoga, and so much more. We recommend that you try all the different kinds of formats you can until you find the flow and studio that works for you! It’s important that you find a studio and yoga practice that you connect with and that you feel works well for your mind and body.
Below, we’ve broken down four popular formats of yoga:
Vinyasa Yoga: This form of yoga is a flow of dynamic poses that synchronize your breath with the movement. This style of yoga is also one of the most popular flows in the United States.
Ashtanga Yoga: Ashtanga yoga is a very structured flow of postures that involved the eight limb practice: restraint, observance, posture, breath control, sense withdrawal, concentration, meditative absorption, and enstasy.
Yin Yoga: This is a slow-paced practice of the asanas (postures), and the poses are held for a longer period of time in a cooler tempered room. This practice increases flexibility, joint mobility, and releases tension from the fascia tissues. This is also not recommended weekly. Yin yoga is a tissue-specific exercise and over practicing this style of yoga may lead to over-stretching for some yogis.
- Hot Yoga: This is the practice of yoga in a heated room. Temperatures can range from 85-105 degrees Fahrenheit. Practicing in a hot room increases your blood flow, increases circulation throughout your body, and increases flexibility.
Every yoga studio is unique and has a different community and personality. Every studio offers a list of different class formats, different styles of yoga, and a different environment. That’s why it’s important to test out different studios and different instructors so you can find the one that fits you the best. You want to find a studio that you can grow with and one you feel comfortable in.

BEST YOGA APPS
If you find yourself very pressed for time or even a little intimidated to go to a studio alone, try it out first in the comfort of your own home! You can find a lot of great flows on YouTube or through apps you can easily download to your phone. For yoga based apps, we recommend trying 5 Minute Yoga and Pocket Yoga. If you’re looking to explore meditation, we recommend trying Headspace.
If you are looking for some step by step videos that are also very beginner friendly, we recommend checking out Kerri Verna. Also known as @beachyogagirl on Instagram, Kerri has dozens of videos on Youtube where she breaks down yoga poses, give handstand tips, and more.
A great app to find yoga inspo on is Instagram! If you have an account, we also recommend follow @melisfit - she posts a series of photos that show modifications you can take for poses, how to utilize yoga props, and gives useful tips you can use in your practice

One of our favorite topics, yoga clothes! When you walk into your yoga class, you definitely want to be dressed comfortably and cutely. We recommend wearing clothes that are not cotton based, wick sweat, and pants that pass the squat test. Typically, some yogis will wear fitted clothes so their shirts don’t go flying over their head in down dog and so that their clothes move with them as they flow.
