To practice yoga doesn't always mean rolling out your mat in a yoga studio and getting in a full hour of flow. Some people say the best time to do yoga is first thing in the morning on your bed! To do this, set your alarm just five minutes earlier than you normally would. Then, right when you wake up, begin with some light yoga poses in your bed. You probably hear the word meditation thrown around a lot in the yoga community. You might even think of some negative stigmas around it. But try to be open to it - it’s a great tool for becoming present and grounded through connecting your mind, breath, and body. To meditate, you don’t always need to spend a whole lot of time practicing - sometimes you just need five minutes to start feeling its benefits.

 

To use meditation as a tool to improve your everyday life, start by taking a couple minutes in the morning or at night to just breathe. You can sit on a pillow on the floor, sit on your bed, or anywhere that is comfortable for you. Sit up straight and place your hands down by your side. Try to keep your mind focused on your breathing. Just a couple minute of this, and you will start to feel more clear.

Going on a walk is one of the best ways to clear your head. Your walk can be as long or as short as you want it to be, depending on how much time you have, and if you have a furry friend we recommend taking them with you! On a walking meditation, focus your attention on the noises, smells, and things going on around you. Try and keep a steady breath and just enjoy yourself in the moment. You can also listen to podcasts, light music, or focus connecting on what's around you. If you live near a trail, take time to notice the leaves, birds, and the smell of nature.

Being well rested is one of the most important tips on this list! When you sleep, you are allowing your body to rest and recover from the day. When you are properly rested you are more focused throughout your day, you think more clearly, and even your mood is better. Lack of sleep can result in weight fluctuation, mood swings, issues with your memory, and puts your body at higher health risks.

 

If you’re having trouble sleeping at night, that would be a great time to practice meditation and your mindful breathing! For this, please refer back to the meditation tab. Along with this, begin to make mindful decisions a couple hours before bed. Try not to eat very heavy foods after dinner.
